Be Ye Steadfast

Faith is an attitude of the entire self, including both will and intellect, directed toward a person, an idea, or a divine being. Faith indeed includes belief but goes far beyond it. In Assemblies of God Church, we believe in the following:

We believe the Bible to be the inspired and only infallible and authoritative Word of God. We believe that there is one God, eternally existing in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost. We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in the blessed hope of His personal visible future return to this earth to receive to Himself his blood-bought church that it may be with Him forever.

We also believe that the only means of being cleansed from sin is through repentance and faith in the precious blood of Christ. We believe that regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for personal salvation. We believe that the redemptive work of Christ on the cross provides healing of the human body in answer to believing prayer. We believe that the baptism with the Holy Spirit, according to Acts 2:4, with the evidence of speaking in other tongues, is given to every believer who ask for it.

We believe in water baptism by immersion for all who repent and believe on Christ as Saviour and Lord and in Holy Communion, consisting of the elements – bread and the fruit of the Vine – is the symbol expressing the broken body and the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. We believe in the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a Holy Life. We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and lost, the one to everlasting life and the other everlasting damnation.

Paul writing to Timothy as well as all of us today says: “Hold on to the pattern of wholesome teaching you learned from me – a pattern shaped by the faith and love that you have in Christ Jesus. Through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within us, carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to you.” (2 Timothy 1:13-14, NLT)

What do you believe in…? What has been passed down to you in the form of teaching and doctrinal beliefs from your fathers in faith…? We all have it as a duty to pursue God’s word and guard if from the attacks of its adversary. We need to be equipped to give an accurate account of what we believe and why we believe it. In this way not only will we avoid being taken by false teachings, we can pass on this same gospel to the next generation.
