HOLY ‘BATHING’

HOLY ‘BATHING’

As a teenager, we used to live on the upper floor of a tenement building (face-me-i-face-you) which had the toilets and bathrooms at the back , sharing fence with the neighborhood’s primary school. For many weekends (whilst we lived there), I had ‘private’ view of a dirty depraved-looking old man who specialized in bathing women. God forbid bad thing! Mssstcheeeew!
Of course it was easy to decipher the situation (thanks to Nollywood movies), the women had some troubles in their lives, consulted the old man who prescribed ‘spiritual’ bathing/ cleansing amongst other things (perhaps including carnal knowledge of them), they simply needed ‘Spiritual Renewal’, but sadly chose the wrong source. Tufiakwa!

Today’s Sunday School features the biblical concept of repentance, how it relates to Spiritual renewal, shows availability Christ’s love to all who believe and encourages us to worship God in spirit and truth (2Chronicles 29:31)

It’s sad but not strange that even today certain ‘Christians’ and even some pastors seek power and spiritual renewal from the enemy, even when they have a godly heritage.  A replay or blast from the past shows King Ahaz continuously living in defiance to God, his nasty death and the early Succession by his ‘Christian’ & Spiritually renewed Son , Hezekiah…evidence of flirting with sin and temptation. 2 Chron 28:1- 30:27

Repentance is a change of mind in our basic attitudes toward God and Christ that results in turning away from our sinful life style towards Jesus and live by faith in Him, because without Repentance, Spiritual Renewal is impossible.

Do you want to be free, have peace, joy, worship God with a pure heart, face life’s challenges undauntedly? Stop running from ‘pillar to post’, God is not a respecter of persons… Take a decision like Hezekiah today, let his revival stir fresh desires in our hearts for genuine spiritual renewal as individuals and cleansing for this great country Nigeria.

Be empowered, Renewed. Get your ‘Holy Bath’ from Jesus Now!

'Awoof' of the Holy Spirit

God created the world around us. God created us. God didn't build a toll booth to collect user fees for life. Instead, life is free, and being in the created world is free; it's a gift. We humans are the ones who attach fees to what has been freely given to us.

The biggest gift of all, however, is not other people, and is not nature, or the universe, or family. The biggest gift in all of existence is that we are given the Giver. But Jesus is not walking among us today. So another gift has been given - God in yet another way, the divine Spirit through whom Christ is still in effect right here and now. This Spirit leads, shapes, empowers, and gives us joy. The gift a Christian lives in every day, most fundamentally, is the Holy Spirit.

Gifts of the Spirit are special abilities provided by the Holy Spirit to Christians for the purpose of building up the body of Christ. The list of spiritual gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 includes wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, speaking in tongues, and interpretation of tongues. Similar lists appear in Ephesians 4:7-13 and Romans 12:3-8. The gifts of the Spirit are simply God enabling believers to do what He has called us to do. 2 Peter 1:3 says, "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness." The gifts of the Holy Spirit are part of the "everything we need" to fulfil His purposes for our lives.

Gifts of the Spirit - The Definitions
There is some controversy as to the precise nature of each of the gifts of the Spirit, but here is a list of spiritual gifts and their basic definitions.

o   The gift of wisdom is the ability to make decisions and give guidance that is according to God's will.
o   The gift of knowledge is the ability to have an in-depth understanding of a spiritual issue or situation.
o   The gift of faith is being able to trust God and encourage others to trust God, no matter the circumstances.
o   The gift of healing is the miraculous ability to use God's healing power to restore a person who is sick, injured, or suffering.
o   The gift of miracles is being able to perform signs and wonders that give authenticity to God's Word and the Gospel message.
o   The gift of prophecy is being able to proclaim a message from God.
o   The gift of discerning spirits is the ability to determine whether or not a message, person, or event is truly from God.
o   The gift of tongues is the ability to speak in a foreign language that you do not have knowledge of, in order to communicate with someone who speaks that language.
o   The gift of interpreting tongues is the ability to translate the tongues speaking and communicate it back to others in your own language.
o   The gift of administration is being able to keep things organized and in accordance with God's principles.
o   The gift of helps is always having the desire and ability to help others, to do whatever it takes to get a task accomplished.

Which One(s) Do I Have?
The Holy Spirit distributes the gifts of the Spirit as He sees fit (1 Corinthians 12:7-11). God does not want us to be ignorant of how He wants us to serve Him. However, it is very easy for us to get caught up in what spiritual gift(s) we have and then only serve God in that area of ministry. That is not how it works. God calls us to obediently serve Him. He will equip us with whatever gifts of the Spirit we need to accomplish the task or tasks He has called us to. Yes, God calls some to be teachers and gives them the gift of teaching, but that does not excuse the person from serving God in other ways as well. Is it beneficial to know what spiritual gift(s) God has given you? Of course, it is. Is it wrong to focus so much on spiritual gifts that we miss other opportunities to serve God? Yes!

                          Today’s Question
Why are spiritual gifts needed in the church today?

There is no magic formula or spiritual gift test that can tell you what gifts of the Spirit you possess. What we need to focus on is serving God. Do you see a need in your church? Do what you can to meet it. Is there a position in a ministry that is vacant? Pray as to whether God would have you fill it. If we seek God's will and obey His leading, He will always equip us with whatever gifts of the Spirit we need. Spiritual gift tests can be of some value in determining what areas God has especially gifted you. As always, though, place far more emphasis on God's Word and submitting to the Lord's leading than you do on the results of a spiritual gift test.

What Are the Gifts Used For?
The Apostle Paul indicated that the gifts of the Spirit are equally valid, but not equally valuable. Their value is determined by their worth to the church. In dealing with this matter, he used the analogy of the human body. All members of the body have functions, Paul declared, but some are more important than others (1 Corinthians 12:12-26). The service of each Christian should be in proportion to the gifts which he possesses (1 Corinthians 12-14). All believers, as members of the body of Christ, must be serving together in order for the body to be fully-functional. That is why a church needs pastors, teachers, helpers, servants, administrators, those with great faith, etc. All of the gifts of the Holy Spirit working together are needed to produce the full potential of the church. Since the gifts of the Spirit are gifts of grace, their use must be controlled by the rule of love - the greatest of all the gifts of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 13).

GENETIC MISBREED

As I walked down the street, I stumbled upon a mango tree bearing orange fruits. What!? Shocked? Could it be a dream, an accident, experiment or crazy genetic misbreed...Lol... In the same way, you will be greatly shocked, perhaps bewildered if you see a CHRISTian not behaving like CHRIST.

The surest way to determine the species of a tree is to look at the fruit it bears. Similarly, we can look at the fruit that individuals bear to help us discern their spiritual makeup/condition. As Christians, we may wish we were perfect, but the reality is we haven’t arrived. The good news is that the Holy Spirit is at work to develop the character of Christ in us. As the fruit of the Spirit is formed in us, we will become spiritually mature and grow in our effort to be like Christ. The spiritual characteristics that God desires to be increasing in our lives are found in the fruit of the Spirit.
But the fruit of the Spirit is Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-control... (Gal. 5:22-23a) Although nine are listed, Paul referred to them in a singular way – fruit. This shows a unity of purpose and completeness in the nine that work together as one fruit. We do not have the option to pick and choose which fruit we wish to have.
Love:
The Greek word “agape” is used in this passage to define the love that is a fruit of the Spirit. Agape refers to the strongest and purest type of love anyone can know. It is unconditional, the type of love God love us. Love alone embodies selfless concern for the purposes of God and the well-being of others. It is the reflection of the character of God who is love. Love must be the motivation for all we do.
Joy:
Joy is fruit of the Spirit that come through being in right relationship with God. Joy is an inward satisfaction from the Holy Spirit that is not affected by circumstances. The world’s view of joy is conditional. It depends on pleasant circumstances. The joy from the Holy Spirit can be experienced in the middle of suffering and when things are not always going the way we would like.
Peace:
The peace from God keeps our hearts and minds calm and settled when we face difficult problems or hardship and can’t change the situations. It is the inner confidence that God is in control. It is beyond our understanding and it is a benefit of being a child of God.

                                                              Today’s Questions:
Suffering and smiling, and possessing the Fruit of the Spirit – Joy and Peace in difficult situations, are they the same?
Patience:
Patience help us as believers to be understanding and forgiving when wronged by another person, even another believer. Patience recognise that we received God’s forbearance and forgiveness and need to treat others as He has treated us. This level of patience can be developed only as the Holy Spirit bears His fruit in our lives.
Gentleness:
It is the conscious choice to treat others according to their need. Gentleness emphasises what is gentle, kind and good. It should not be confused with weakness and a lack of conviction. The fruit of gentleness is also displayed when we choose to show kindness to others, even those who have wronged us. Our patient, gentle and good actions are not to be based on our feelings. Instead we are to behave this way because God’s love is in our hearts.
Goodness:
The fruit of goodness emphasises what is noble, right and good. It is reaching out to others to do good for them. Goodness involves both our character and our actions. Goodness often is seen in the good works done by godly people. This means we cannot afford to despair in doing good for others.
Faith:
Faith is the quality that makes us trustworthy or dependable. It is the bases for our relationship with God – salvation is based on God’s grace and faithfulness not on anything good we have done. Faith without faithfulness is faithlessness. Faithful people will consistently be involved in good works for they know it is a way to express their faith in the God who is faithful to save.
Meekness:
Meekness is a humility that allows us think of ourselves with sober judgment. Each person has strengths and weaknesses. Meekness allows us to acknowledge both and find ways to use our strengths to bless others and accept the help of others in areas where we are weak. It is also exhibited when we show respect to each other.
Temperance (self-control):
Self-control makes it possible for Christians to live righteously and godly in this world as they look forward to the return of Christ. Self-control is a product of God’s grace in our lives – saying “No” to the world and “Yes” to God.
Did you know that...?
o   Spiritual gifts and virtues have no meaning unless motivated by love.
o   It takes the Holy Spirit at work in us to treat others with patients, gentleness and goodness.
o   Being at peace with God helps us to be at peace with others.
When a person learns to be at peace with God and others, he can be at peace with himself. Being at peace with God removes any guilt that sin may have caused. Being at peace with others may keep us from saying or doing something we later regret. Something remarkable begins to happen as believers grow in their relationships with God. They begin to notice improvement in their relationships with others.
As much as we might like to, we cannot grow the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. We can, however, corporate with the Spirit as He produces these Christ-like virtues in us. Often this cooperation involves choices we must make to life’s circumstances. Will we choose to worry or commit our concerns to God in pray? Will we harbour grudges against those who hurt us or will we practice forbearance and forgiveness? Will we out of pride promote ourselves or humbly trust God to exalt us?
